Thinking about Laser Hair Removal?

by john on June 16, 2010

Lip – chin – underarms – bikini …what do these body parts have in common? Laser hair removal. It’s our most-requested treatment at Vivaz. We’re not surprised because our laser treatments for hair removal provide great, long-term results!

Let’s begin by exploring a bit about how the laser actually works. Lasers produce an intense beam of focused bright light that we use to treat many skin concerns – from wrinkles and ages spots to unwanted hair. The bright light gets absorbed by the skin, is converted to heat and destroys cells in the targeted areas.

In the case of laser hair removal, the laser works below the skin’s surface while leaving the epidermis or top layer intact. One of the first things to understand is the targeted hair will not fall out tonight, or tomorrow for that matter. It can take up to three weeks after a treatment for hair to fall away. You can help this process along by gentle use of a washcloth or loofah sponge four to five days after treatment.

Immediately following laser treatment you may experience redness or minor swelling of the skin, similar to mild sunburn. These normal effects are temporary and usually disappear within 24 hours. Cold packs or soothing aloe vera gel may be used to ease any discomfort.

The right candidates for laser hair removal are people who do not have gray or blonde hair. Light colored hair doesn’t capture enough laser light to work for hair removal. Lasers will permanently reduce your amount of unwanted hair, because all body hair grows in cycles, you may need to get a touchup during the year.

A New Kind of Sunscreen

by kiley on May 20, 2010

The sun is shining bright, and that means it’s time to be thinking about how you’re going to protect your skin this summer. I interviewed one of the staff aestheticians at Vivaz Medical Spa, Marilyn McManus, get some information about finding the right sun screen for your skin type.

“For really any skin type, a mineral (or physical) sunscreen works great,” says Marilyn. She explains that mineral sunscreens, unlike chemical sunscreens, do not cause chemical reactions to the skin. Physical sunscreens contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, so these are two ingredients to look for in a really good sunscreen.

“Another positive to physical sunscreens is their ability to keep your body cool in the sun by creating a barrier.” They are typically found in powder form which makes for easy and light application, and they can only be removed with friction, which is another great benefit.

You can find these and other medical-grade sunscreens in stock at Vivaz.

Marilyn also has important tips to always keep in mind for sun protection: “The lighter your skin, the higher your SPF should be, Reapply every 80-90 minutes, and always apply sunscreen over your moisturizer for best results.”
